Welcome to the start of the second year of "In The Garden"
and I hope that you have enjoyed your first year of
gardening advice from Acanthus Garden Design. One things for
sure, the mix of sun and rain this year to date has been great for
growing, so I'm guessing that your gardens are all flourishing. July
and August are the peak of the growing season so I hope you're
enjoying the fruits of your labour.

The gardening calendar moves on towards its peak in mid summer.
No doubt your mowing season has started and you are planning
trips to the garden centre to fill up your pots and baskets. Don't forget
grasses, perennials and compact shrubs can look just as good in a
container and last longer too! The Acanthus "In the Garden" article has
reached its annual cycle and I look forward to sharing more hints and
tips with you in the coming year. Enjoy the garden whatever the
weather.

Welcome to the busiest period in the garden. As the garden starts to dress the
bare skeletons of winter once more its time to don your wellington boots and
face the beautiful fresh spring days. If you are really keen, you've probably made the
most of the stunning sunny days in February already and need no further
encouragement. Invest now in mulching, planting, weeding, pruning and you will be
ahead of the game come summer.

A very Happy New Year to you all. Whether your resolutions
involve getting fitter, losing Christmas weight or going organic the
garden can help you achieve the new you for 2008! Here are a few
suggestions of how to keep busy on those beautiful frosted mornings,
whilst nature glitters around you in the low lying winter sun.

As the garden slows down and heads for its dormant season, there are
still a few essential jobs to be doing to round off the year. It's also a
great time to be reflecting on your successes of this year and planning for
the next. Whether it be adding more structural planting to the garden now
you see it's winter silhouette, perusing seed catalogues for inspirations for
next years borders or coming up with a garden re-design plan to implement
in the spring, winter is the season of planning the garden.

Autumn is upon us and is an abundant time in the garden, with a dramatic
backdrop of rich hues bathed in soft golden light. As the garden heads
towards dormancy, you may think this is time to relax, but harvesting is the
key task of the season and will keep you on your toes well into October. The
ripening fruit needs collecting, there are squashes and courgettes to collect
and ripened seed heads provide us with a potentially fabulous display for
next year. In addition to this you can harvest more plants from your
perennials. All in all you get to proudly reap the fruits of your labour earlier
in the year.
