Garden for an Exposed Site
Design Brief
To provide a re-design of the courtyard area of the garden,
incorporating a reflective pond and a focal point. Also, to provide a
planting plan for the terrace, gravelled and courtyard areas of the
garden. The planting scheme aimed to echo the contemporary style chosen
for the interior of the property and would to be resilient to the
exposed nature of the site. The scheme would also be naturalistic in
style, to allow it to sit in harmony with the surrounding rural
landscape and fantastic views from the property. The key colour choices
for planting include rich blues, white, silver and pinks, with low
maintenance a priority for the choice of plants.
Design Solution
A reflective pool with adjoining terrace was designed to allow the
reflection of the sky into the substantial area of hard landscaping.
Silver granite chippings covered the walkways, to complement the
existing granite terraces.
The substantial herbaceous borders in the
courtyard area of the garden were designed using drought tolerant
plantings. The planting palette used feminine hues of purple, silver,
pink, white, blue and silver with splashes of lime for contrast. An
evergreen structure of shrubs formed the basis of the borders, also used
to provide a shelter from the high winds that buffet the garden. Grasses
were used for instant height and to add movement to the borders. The
clients were keen gardeners so the bulk of the planting consisted of
herbaceous perennials, bulbs and fragrant herbs.
